“Human resources are like natural resources; they’re often buried deep. You have to go looking for them, they’re not just lying around on the surface." - Sir Ken Robinson Ever feel like you’re just not a fit? Like you’re a square peg in a round hole? Or have a son, daughter or spouse like that? Years ago, Gillian’s mother took her to eight-year-old daughter to doctor to see if she could help her struggling daughter. Her school saw her as “hopeless.” The school wrote to her parents saying “We think your daughter has a learning disorder. She can’t concentrate. She keeps fidgeting.” Today, we might say she had ADHD. Tongue in cheek, Sir Ken Robinson said, “But this was the 1930’s and ADHD hadn’t been invented yet! People weren’t aware they could have that.” The specialist Gillian went to see listened as her mother detailed all the terrible problems Jillian was having in school. Incomplete homework. Others being interrupted. Finally, the doctor told Gillian, “I’ve listened to your mother and I need to speak with her privately.” As the specialist left the room, he turned on the radio sitting on his desk. “Just stand and watch her,” he said to Gillian’s mom. As they both watched, Gillian was instantly on her feet moving to the music. The specialist turned to Gillian’s mother and said, “You know Mrs. Lynne, Gillian isn’t sick. She’s a dancer.” The specialist’s advice: “Take her to a dance school.” Gillian’s mother did just that. They quickly encountered a whole room filled with all kinds of young girls just like Gillian! They were ‘fidgety.” Those who “couldn’t concentrate.” However, they could dance! Gillian went on to become the famous dancer and choreographer, Gillian Lynne. Her theatre choreography associated with two of the longest-running shows in Broadway history Cats, and The Phantom of the Opera.
At age 87, by then a multi-millionaire, Gillian was made a DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2014 New Year Honors List. What might have happened had that specialist not looked deeper into the real Gillian?? I can’t help being “fidgety” myself: I can’t NOT care about this issue. Today, coaches offer what that specialist did… the opportunity to pay real attention to a single person and deeply care to free the real them! And how many millions of others are there out there, who like Gillian, are put as square blocks into round holes?? Dancers trying to be a dentists! Inventors trying to be a manager. This may not be you at all…. OR it might. Sometimes the fact that you just don’t fit, and you fidget means or feel like a failure in an environment DOES NOT mean there’s something wrong with you. It may mean it’s not a fit! What are you doing that’s even making others think you’re crazy? A misfit? Not one of us? The Bible is pretty clear. God doesn’t make one size fits all. “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” (Romans 12:6) “All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.” (I Corinthians 12:11) What if a significant gift that matters A LOT for such as time as this? Now’s your time to dance! Will you?
