"Even with all that money, he's just not happy! And he still doesn't think he has enough money.... "
That's what a friend who works with super rich clients told me. This person is a billionaire. YET my friend feels bad for his unhappy client.
I know that many people (who aren't billionaires) may think, "Cry me a river! How can someone with so much NOT be happy?!"
Truly, too many of us, billionaire or not, buy the lie I WILL BE HAPPY WHEN.....
I Get more money
I Keep more money
I have security money
I have retirement money
Sooooo... what does it take then..?
Both the Bible AND Scientific studies actually advise the same things on how to be happier.
The 20+ years of Positive Psychology (“the scientific study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive”) has shown: WE CAN CHANGE and become happier. It takes being intentional though.
Martin Seligman, one of the leading researchers in positive psychology and author of Authentic Happiness, describes happiness as having three parts: pleasure, engagement, and meaning.
Seligman says that all three are important, but that of the three, engagement and meaning make the most difference to living a happy life.
I don't disagree, nor do studies with thousands of people that poled them randomly throughout the day to ask, "Are you happy right now?"
The Bible actually has some really important wisdom to offer those of us who'd rather have happy lives than unhappy ones.
Some things we can do TODAY... and everyday!
1. DECIDE TO ENJOY LEGITIMATE PLEASURES
The Bible teaches that noticing and enjoying good things in life to just plain make you happy.... Notice them!
Enjoy good food and drink
God doesn't just smile when we go to church or say our prayers. God created a world FULL of good things to enjoy like a toddler with a teddy bear! Will we enjoy them?
2. BE FULLY PRESENT (Get your head out of the anxiety the past or future worries)
The Bible and every scientific study agree that FULLY engaging in what we're doing at the present moment brings life and happiness. Being elsewhere doesn't.
Jesus taught: "Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." (Matthew 6:31)
In other words - we DO have the ability to be present in the "now" - enjoying what we ;ve been given NOW. Noticing others NOW. Appreciating the staggering good things and wealth we have NOW.
That clearly involves being OK with the tasks and the work we're doing NOW.
And think about, it, aren't you really happiest when you are in NOW?
3. ENGAGE A BIGGER PURPOSE FOR YOUR WORK (even bigger than money)
The Bible invites any of us who will answer to have a larger purpose - even in things that may seem rather mundane! "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." (I Corinthians 10:31)
The truly "blessed" and happy people discover and engage the meaning for life that's bigger - much bigger - than even our own attainments of money, power or stuff.
There are happy billionaires who are investing themselves in creating "glory of God" things on earth with great intentionality. They're using money, influence and property to serve others... and they're really, really happy they get to do it.
Those who get the greatest joy from what they do clearly see it as part of a bigger picture.
Feeding the hungry
Bringing healing to the hurting
Coaching people to their fulfill their destiny (OK, so that's what motivates me!!)
Can you see applying these EACH DAY and finding a whole lot of happiness Of course, easier said than done (or blogged!) but what if we were to regularly monitor ourselves and ask AM I..
2. Present in the moment?
3. Engaging a bigger purpose in your work?
