The other truth about these stories: They're not who I really am and they're not what I really do.
Two other things that have been true about these statements:
1. Believing them affected how I acted.
2. I'm not alone in believing such life-taking and destiny-stealing "stories."
Way too many others buy into these stories of "Who they really are" and "What they're really like." The effects of such in heads and actions: well, pretty destructive, dead-end to life, defusing to leadership and defeating to livelihood. Death.
What story or story do you believe?
Some of those I've come to know include "drinker," "liar," "fraud," "loser," "addict," "fearful," "loner," "pretender," "over-spender" "lousy wife," "too young," "too old," "failure." Pretty sad, huh?
No one who allows such stories to live on, fester or rent the room inside their heads will get to live into their full destinies. They won't shine. They can't live in freedom.
The question most of us story-tellers tend to ask: "Can we change stories?" "Is change even possible?" "We've tried... so Why even bother?" Especially if we've tried to suck it up and try to change.... and try again to change... AND WE FAILED!
Thus the "Why bother question?"
The reason: because healing happens! I've seen it in me! I've seen it in others.
God calls to Adam in the garden, right after Adam bought the lie and ate the fruit, "Where are you?"
Adam's reply was fear and hiding. "I hear you in the garden and I was afraid and I hid." (Genesis 3:10)
And ever since, hiding is our tactic. We'll hide and pretend "We got no problem, thank you!"
The first step is to get clear "What story have I believed about me that been doggin me for a long time now?"
Write it down. Look at it. Acknowledge it.
God knew that Adam's perception of himself wasn't his real identity. Someone else was feeding Adam bits of information of who he was. God knew this wasn't who Adam really was. His identity needed to be questioned.
It may be time to challenge your own identity... Who are you? Really??
"I call you friends."
"You are my beloved son in whom I am well please."
"You are my child."
Who are you really?
Imagine believing these things, not arrogantly, but honestly.
1. Community that helps each other.
I truly think that those who needed God's help were weak. NOT ANY MORE! I now believe those who need God's help are living in reality! They're wise. They're not sick any more!
So, I need God's help to not be depressed any more. Guess what?
HOWEVER it won't take forever! Experts have found that it takes between 21 and 30 days to change an ingrained habit. That's not forever! It is 21 to 30 days though.
Just choose one to change this month.
What lie story do you seek to change this month?
Act in that truth. Live into that real story. Be you!
Frankly, I'll be "I'm a morning person" this whole month!
How about you? Choose one story.... then live into the real story for the next 30 days. Go for it!!
