The NCAA TV spot asks the question: "Where does all the money go?" Hadn't thought about it til then, but I guess there would be a lot of revenue for umpteen million people viewing games, TV ads inviting us to buy everything from beer (a whole of that!) to boats and baby initiated online trades.
The NCAA "short answer:" "WE PUT OUR MONEY WHERE OUR MISSION IS"
Hmmmm. Gotta admit: good answer! In their ad, they explain that most of the TV marketing and rights fees go to hosting the 88 championships, supporting the 1055 member schools and funding athletes including an annual $2 billion for financial aid and scholarships: But their short answer gets back to one simple statement: their mission : to govern competition in a fair, safe, equitable and sportsmanlike manner, and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount. (Their web site states that they also include their listed core values as part of their mission.)
I'm sure there's no perfection in NCAA spending plans - but doesn't it makes sense for ANYONE ,whether company, community, family or individual, should "put their money where their mission is?"
Doesn't it make sense that when you get money you use the filter of your mission by asking:
"Why am I/are we here?"
"What mission am I/are we on?"
"What are my/our core values?"
That assumes two important steps that NCAA does are in place for us:
1. We have a clearly defined mission and value statement.
2. We review it regularly, especially when we have money come in the door.
No, of course there's still the complexity... but it sure does help to have those things in place to make most of the allocation decisions "no brainers." At least avoid the shotgun approach to doing a little of everything.
