Framed against the scenic vista of the Rocky Mountains in the background, Sheryl was so proud to introduce us to her two prize horses. She just spent the afternoon training and grooming them and was finishing up her duties when I arrived with Mindy, Jon and Josh for a visit.
Layla, a gorgeous white female trotted over on her own and came right up to introduce herself to us. "Hey there beautiful?" I said as I gently patted her nose.
Sheryl had just finished washing and grooming her and she looked ready to be in a show.
Then, without warning and a big thud, Layla suddenly fell to the ground and began rolling back and forth, bathing herself in dirt and dust... filling herself with grime and transforming before our eyes from white horse to filthy beige horse.
What was unexpected and filled with grace: Sheryl's response: A big-hearted laugh! "Layla!" she said laughing. "Oh well, there goes our grooming. Look at you!"
As I watched the now filthy no-longer-white-horse emerge, I thought, "Wow, that's not the response I expected." Cussing? A "Darn it?" An "I quit!" It really was pretty funny. Wasn't it?
Sheryl laughed at the beige horse.
Moral of the Story: Sometimes beige horses happen! You just gotta laugh.
Better way to live? Yes. A better way to work? Totally.
The truth: not all of our work succeeds. Sometimes we fail because of uncontrollable animals... and people. No need for blame, fault or claiming that our work is futility.
Confession: I have spent far too many days cussing the beige horse and it doesn't make anything different. It's just not life in the unforced rhythm of grace. The way of Jesus.
It's OK to let go of the "100 ways how not to make a light-bulb" Mr. Edison.
It's OK to lose this sale and know that it doesn't mean you stink, you're bad and that your product or service won't sell.
It's OK to chuck your first 5 drafts.
It's OK to see this broken relationship as an education.
God is still God and you are still OK.
Have you experienced any "beige horses" in your work?
Would you post about them below and encourage the rest of us. Maybe we can share a laugh together and compare dirt.
