I recently spoke with a man who described the crazy cycle keeping him stuck, discouraged and feeling like progress was next to impossible.
"I feel hopeless, anxious and tired of things not changing," he shared. "I brood and hide and though I don't like the term, I get depressed. I hate that.. then pity my own inability to get unstuck."
"Then, something triggers me...typically in my wife and I let it all out..usually dumping on her and telling her how frustrated I really am. I actually hate myself for doing that."
"Then what do you do?" I asked.
"Well then I feel even worse. Inside I hate myself more. I get even lower and blame her, me, God, my situation."
"Which leads to more anxiety and depression, right?"
I get it... He may as well have taken this straight from my own playbook of crazy ways to live.
I've heard that psychologist call this nutty pattern called "the crazy eight." It's like traveling in figure 8 where on one side you have Anxiety/Depression. On the other side lurks the Angry Outburst side.
Crazy cycle of depression/anxiety ...then anger ..acting out...which then leads back to more self disappointment...then anxiety.
Here's the even harder part... (you thought that was bad!) A system tends to stay the same unless something radically interrupts to break it, typically from the outside.
In the Bible Paul exclaimed, "What a wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?" Romans 7:24)
This is where Paul intentionally turns to God for a breakthrough answer.
That may look like some kind of angelic encounter... Maybe but likely not.
However .... When stuck in a "crazy eight" we may need something still left untried...or possibly tried again..
