Among the most unhelpful beliefs I've lived with is this: "Big boys don't fear." That's right - of course they don't cry either, but they certainly don't get afraid. Being afraid is for weaklings, sissies and pagans. On the list of things not to fear include:
Failure
Death
People (and especially what they think!)
Pain
Poverty
Differentness
Public Speaking
Being Wrong
Loss
Evil
Change
Failure (Oh, did I already say that one?)
Fear itself
Pssst... Truth be told - I've feared those things at one time or the other... even recently. I can wake up with both black and white and Technicolor stories pulsing through my mind, playing out bone-chilling scenarios, assuming catastrophe after catastrophe, blaming my cursedeness, preparing the "what nexts?" planning the "what ifs?" and complaining with "what the hecks!" and "Why me's!" No, I'm not proud of this... but that's been part of the problem!
"So," you might ask, "Did it work for ya?" Well, um... sure... if you think that three hours of sleep, avoiding people, underlying anger, borderline depression, a beer before bed and cookies for breakfast "works." OK, www.JeffCaliguire.com
