Its been the theme of my week: Moms with big dreams.
One mom shared over dinner how and why she founded TWO, now thriving, companies while her children were still in grade school and her husband practiced law. "My kids grew up thinking it was normal to be greeting people in from all over the country for our conferences. Their job was to meet every other kid who came with them and report back with their names and something about them. My kids just thought that was the norm. It was really good for them!"
Another Mom excitedly shares that she loves being available for her children after school and providing opportunities she never had as a kid. However, she now dreams of providing the same kind of athletic opportunity for children whose parents can't afford the money or time to get their children involved. She dreams of creating a foundation and a platform to provide this for less fortunate children and now plans to work with a financial advisor (aka her own husband!) to create a foundation in 2011.
Another Mom dreams of coaching and equipping other moms in transition to discover and engage their callings and dreams... even if they still need to be flexible with their children.... or if they're in a season where the children no longer need full-time support.
Its been said there's a key difference between "having dreams" and "going for dreams." Most have dreams, but only a small few really live their dreams. Yet, these particular "Dream Big Moms" go beyond "modest dreams" of a summer vacation, hobbies or getting to play tennis at the club. They dream of impacting others... possibly many, many others. And having experienced the hands on "dream-job" of nesting, nursing, nurturing and navigating sibling rivalries, they may actually be more prepared than most MBA educated twenty-somethings!
Could the most significant leaders of the next decade be Dream Big Moms? The ones who go beyond attending weight-watchers to doing what it takes to bring much-needed solutions to Washington, Wall Street and Rwanda?
