How many people do you know who believe they really are "underachievers," "not gifted," "nothing special," "not exceptional" OR not even smart at all?
Sadly, I know far too many. Do you? And it really hurts when you see it in teenagers!
Often, what they have in common:....they didn't "do well" in school. They were not in the "smart people classes," the "AP" or didn't make A's, B's or sometimes even C's or D's.
And something inside them settles for it. Labels themselves.... "NOT GOOD ENOUGH."
And for many of us.... even years out of school, we have the "not good enough" hangover. Or fear of doing things that may be judged as C, D or F.
In her recent TED talk called "The Power of Believing You Can Improve" psychologist Carol Dweck points to a high school in Chicago that removed the "F" grade from it's evaluations. Instead, for those who didn't fulfill the requirements for the course, they gave the grade, "NOT YET"
Dweck says,
