Finally, when it became clear she was about to serve divorce papers, my friend shared with me by phone: "I think it's time for me to reinvent myself."
I was so taken back by his statement that three years later, I remember the exact spot I was on the road when he spoke those words. I was more than a bit skeptical. Could he really reinvent himself?
"Do we really get to just reinvent ourselves?" Really?
Fast forward three years and my once chronically overweight, stuck in a frustrating and underpaying job, fairly low-esteemed friend now weights in at more than 60 pounds less, runs marathons, works in a home-office dream job and inspires others that "yes you can!"
Not to mention, he's
dating a woman he's madly in love with,
mentors and dotes on his daughters in ways that puts other dads to shame
travels to exotic spots to perform his job with his own brother
and looks 10 years younger!
"I believe God allows us to make U-Turns in Life" says LDS Church now all over the internet. My friend sure proved this was the case!
But when? When is it time to reinvent ourselves? When is it time to decide that life needs a You-Turn and not just a small tweak?
THEN- DO SOMETHING instead of just wishing life and leadership were different.
Consider if any of these apply to you.
When settling for low-grade depression as a way of life (maybe even medicating)
When bored with the job for more than a year
When under 50 and looking forward to retirement
After experiencing the death of a loved one
After experiencing a divorce
When it's a new year
When you lose a job and aren't sure you want to get one doing the same thing
When working in a job you don't love and things aren't going to change
When your kids move away from home
When you don't sense God is real in your life
When you've accepted an addiction as "just the way I am"
When you don't feel like you serve God or humanity in any tangible way
When you lack real friends or community
When you think your stress is just the way it will always be
When making too little money for the time you invest
When you sense you don't have much real adventure in your life
When you realize you wouldn't be excited about spending a weekend with you
The good news: As the ad says, "God allows us to make U-Turns in Life." And like any good traveler knows, the best time to make a U-Turn is as soon as it's legal. (At least hopefully legal!?)
Now is a great time to draw a line in the sand... (or snow!) Say with that great sage Popeye the Sailor-man, "That's all I can stands, cause I canst stands no more!"
I will follow up with a post on some tangible suggestions of "HOW?" OK?
