I once believed the mission of God was really ONLY about getting sinful people to be able to go to heaven. Not unimportant.
However, if that was Jesus only job, He, himself, must have missed that memo. He sure seemed quite "distracted" by work to change the broken world NOW and invite others to join in that venture.
I was reading this morning in Luke and came across Jesus' claim of being anointed for work.
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery for the sight of the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." (Luke 4:18-19)
Some things Jesus clearly believed.
The world was broken.
People needed to hear a message of HOPE.
People need tangible HELP.
God's Spirit is in the business of anointing work that was hopeful AND helpful.
Instead, He set out to solve real problems that were making life nasty, brutish, short and depressing. His paycheck included lives made better.
Jesus quotes Isaiah 61 in his own explanation of mission, which shares what "God's favor" looks like in reality.
Isaiah's prophecy shows that God's favor looks like spiritual revival where people get on mission WITH God's Spirit to create health, healing, justice and great cities. A broken world becomes a better world. People become healthier, happier and, yes, even wealthier.
"They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated. They will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations." (Isaiah 61:4)
encourages those who feel economically hopeless
restores the emotionally wounded and despairing
heals the sick
rebuilds war torn cities
provides refuge for aliens
creates economic prosperity
comforts the grieving
creates justice for the oppressed
How does this relate to you?
As God's Spirit gets hold of you, you may very much find that you, like Jesus, have been anointed to be part of this transformational work in the world.
And, contrary to popular belief that such work only fits the categories of religion and non-profit employment, you will likely do your work in what has been wrongly labeled, "secular." (As if God won't work in the healthcare or business sector) In fact, much of the transformational work in the coming years will happen as a result of anointed people in
