When Mid Life stares you in the face, and that face would be "YOU," it's time to own up to ask, "What would my best life look like in mid life pour moi? " (for me!)
Some of those "tell-tale" signs that mid-life may be you.
When you see pics of your friends from high school on Facebook and you think they may have uploaded their dad's picture for their profile.
When you see your own profile pic and think you may have uploaded your own dad's picture!
When friends e-mail you after someone posted a pic of you in college and they tell you that you "looked" just like your son when you were young! (Frankly I just received that e-mail this morning!)
When the media world questions whether Brett Favre is over the hill and he's still years younger than you are!
When you do the math and wonder if there's more ahead or behind.
You get the picture! But, I think one of the biggest signs of Mid Life is when we ask the question:
"AM I UTILIZING THIS ONE AND ONLY LIFE I'VE BEEN GIVEN TO DO WHAT I WAS MEANT TO DO? AM I GIVING IT MY BEST?"
In the last few days, I've had that exact conversation with no less than five people. Really!
Encouragement: I think if you don't ask that question at some point, you may be on cruise control and be ignoring the signs of the ticking clock. On the other hand, I can attest that "mid life crisis" really hits hard when we submerge the questions, just keep going and refuse to intentionally make the tweaks, turns or 180's necessary to align ourselves with what the best of "us." And trust me that's not worth it! I can tell you that life crisis feels like emptiness, discouragement, an aching sense of "why am I doing this?" going through the motions, and even secretly asking questions like, "What if I did just head to Vegas for a while?" "What if I took a walk on the wild side?" "Was Billy Joel right about only the good die young?" (PS. If you've never heard of Billy Joel, you're too young to be reading this blog entry!)
On the other hand: I'm convinced that our best life at mid life happens when we fully align ourselves with our truest callings, visions and values. We step back and gain an accurate picture of who we are at our best, what we're called to do for the rest of our days - then live that with gusto. We stop feeling sorry for our past failures and fumbles as God's higher educational program. Older AND WISER!
AND we no longer feel like we're the only ones asking these dag nab mid life questions, but join with others in the authentic community of the somewhat grayer, balder and bellyer. We dis the Prozac and deploy the full expressions of our life experience of joy, pain and pleasure.
There can be life at mid life. Do you believe it?
And we have fun today! I don't know about where you are, but its gorgeous out today. Time to enjoy this day - NO REGRETS!
