Over the past few weeks, I've participated in a coaching class where the teacher articulated the 5 deep desires that cause people to take action and hunger for change.
1. Make money.
2. To look better.
3. To feel better.
4. To improve their relationship.
5. To improve their performance.
However, as I was recently explaining these to some friends, I sensed there's a significant desire missing from the list. It's one motivates me and many of my friends and doesn't fit in any one of these categories - but actually impacts all of other categories.
The desire for meaning and impact.
The desire to make our lives count, leave a legacy, live our calling, create transformational change and change things in the world remains a largely "untapped market."
It's one that may just be THE issue the younger generation will rise to when they find avenues to tangibly link to real life.
Yes, it may feel higher up on the hierarchy of human needs (We tend to need money for food and shelter and health to do much else... ) However, take away meaning and the ability to create impact in the world and human thriving won't happen.
Creativity will be lacking.
Relationships will be "me centered."
Looking good will be selfish and image as end in itself.
In fact, many start think that their and meaning and impact actually derives from the money, looks, relationship or performance. And still feel like something is missing.
It is missing. The desire for meaning and making a difference is part of being human. Work and life that lacks this connection won't sustain the human spirit.
Over lunch a forty-something man told me, "I'm ready to discover the deeper meaning of my life. I just don't know if I can or where to start."
Why did it take so long? Why do many never even ask such questions?
Yes, this is a spiritual desire and some think it doesn't fit in places like business, education or technology.
I beg to differ. I believe that the business, education, media, technology and of course the arts that intentionally address the "6th desire" will find a hungry, and quite unsaturated market in the coming years.
People who discover their deeper meaning and impact by engaging callings, passions and ways to make a difference WILL make money, look better, feel better, improve relationships and perform better.
Agreed, this question can feel risky: "What is my deeper meaning?" "What is my mission?" It takes faith to believe we have a destiny, a purpose or a path of impact.
The only thing that will be sacrificed by not addressing this desire is fullness of life. Can we afford that?
