Fill in the blank: When I _______ during vacation, that's a really good day!
So what do you do when you're on vacation that makes it feel more "vacation-like?" Of course, most of us love the sun, water, exercise, good food, family. But is there something that you uniquely look forward to that makes you feel rejeuventated? Do you read? Write letters? How about design things? Serve the needy? Even check e-mail and read blogs?
I had an "aha" during our vacation time in North Carolina a few weeks ago. I'm actually rejeuvenated and refreshed, even feel "vacated," when I get to spend some time writing. (or choose to!) That's right! I had one woman inquire why I was "working so hard" during vacation. What she didn't understand was that for me writing feels more like play. After I write, I'm actually more fun to be around and less "Oscar the Grouch -ish." Go figure!
Someone recently noticed some of the things I've written and exclaimed, "When in the world did you have the time to do that?" If he only knew! But what was he really saying, "You couldn't pay me enough to do that kind of work!"
So clearly, not all of us "people-types" define work and vacation in the same way.
So how about you? What do you do on vacation that's a bit atypical, but still feels life-giving? Might there be a clue there as to how you might take a "vacation" today even while "working?"
In his book Tribes, business author Seth Godin wrote, "Instead of wondering when your next vacation is, might you ought to set up a life you don't need to escape from?"
Hmmmmmmmm... Go for it. Take a vacation. See what happens!
