I just spent the last 4 days in one of the best educational settings imaginable.... playing golf (well, for me not quite "playing") with 13 guys. (Yes, clearly not in Illinois. Ahhhh...)
We all share a mutual friendship with Frank, (who brought us together) turning 50.... and a willingness to explore what's going on in our lives. Yes, brave men! And really, really fun men!
We even read a book called Unfinished: Filling the Hole in Our Gospel by Richard Stearns. (Frank's idea and he sent us the book beforehand!) We also spent time in the mornings and evenings talking about
What we felt was "finished" in our lives
What was still "unfinished."
Our biggest unanswered questions
And yes, it didn't hurt that we did so surrounded by golf courses, palm trees, 70's weather and gourmet food! (very unlike 33 and a freezing rain outside my window at the moment)
How was this "The Best Free Education on the Planet?"
It springs from something one of my 18-year-old shared with me last week. This 18-year-old, one of the smartest and most learned people I have ever met almost failed to graduate high school. "How do you know so much??" I asked him last week?
"I try to learn AT LEAST ONE THING from every person."
Wow! Imagine! We're surrounded by the best free education possible and often fail to do anything with it!
So, on the plane home last night, I tried to put this "free education" concept into practice. I jotted down what I learned from each person on the trip. I asked, "What did I learn from this person over the past few days?"
Here's what I learned and hope in some way to better integrate into my life.
Augie: Sharpen your saw... take time to invest in your own well-being and growth
David (aka: Eugene the Love Machine): See the painful "embarrassments" in your life as the best future comedy that could exist! (the worse the hemorrhoids, the better!) May add a need to pray seriously for this doctor among us who agreed to Gene as his patient!)
Frank: Share the story of your faith journey. It brings life and challenges the rest of us. Seek God's MAIN priorities for this season of your life and don't deviate. Collect friends for life and connect them to each other.
Stephen S: Sometimes the main "one thing" you can do is two things. Volunteer so others might get a break. (Volunteered to go to Iraq and Afghanistan over Christmas!)
Tommy: Know that God really wants our "success." He cares that we become successful people in all the right ways.
Andy: Treat others with dignity and respect.. Follow God's surprising open doors. (And the be sure David has his true phone number.... not the maintenance guy!)
Mitch: Choose happiness! Ask the HUGE questions that no one else will ask and you create discussion that we will never forget and will change our lives. ("Why are we here?" "What is God like?" Wow!!)
Kevin: Really see others.... AND be there to listen to them. Jesus turned around and listened to the hemorrhaging woman's story! Why shouldn't we? Also, be rich in time. Poverty of time is one of the greatest forms of poverty.
Janet (Frank's mom) Find your one main thing and do it at any age! It will give you energy and life for everything else!
Eddie: Teach others by showing them how and explaining why. Model it. (He played golf with me! A whole lot of teaching needed!)
Chuck: Be faithful and love being who God made you. You don't need to be anyone or aspire to things God didn't make you to be.
BF: Invest in others success and you will be successful in every way.
Steve P: Share honestly. Don't perform. The best gift you can give people is your full attention.
WHAT IF... JUST WHAT IF... we really could be intentional to learn these kinds of things from each other? Even from failures and mistakes?
Just sayin.... this really is the best free education on the planet? What do you think
