It was a whole lot easier for me to see in Allen (name changed to protect the innocent... and not so innocent) but I know for sure that two forces compete to win each day inside me.
Good Jeff vs. Bad Jeff
SO PLAIN TO SEE as I listened to Allen detail all the reasons why his work situation was hopeless and his ability to do anything zero. "I'm just not smart enough," he said. "I don't have the experience." "I'm not as motivated as I once was." "I lack the necessary skills." "I'm just too plain tired!"
Had some some alien force had taken over the Allen I knew? Sure, there were things he certainly could not control, but the huge opportunity to lead seemed so plain to the rest of us and was so invisible to the crumbling shadow of Allen speaking. The "Allen" speaking was not the confident, problem-solving leader I knew him to be. Who was that loser guy? Why was my friend Allen so quick to obey the voice of one so powerless to do anything in this situation?
Yep, I GET IT. I DO THE SAME THING! Like Allen, confronted with some challenge, I can let "Bad Jeff" do all the talking. Not very difficult for me to put my own list together to describe the two characters... Here's what these two people who do battle inside me look like. WARNING: These lists are not for those who would rather believe in just one of these as the real me. (ummm.... like me)
Sounds like a great guy? Right? But, sadly, I also need to introduce you to "Bad Jeff."
It would be so much easier if the second Jeff just didn't exist... or just took a long vacation to Miami or something! Unfortunately, he still exists and WANTS TO LIVE MY LIFE! Even run it, ruin it, and refuse to let real progress happen.
Wouldn't it be so much easier if these two characters could just identify themselves when they do the talking or decide to act out?
"Hi, this is Bad Jeff: You're just not good enough Dude!... You'll screw this one up like you do every other one!"
"Hi, good Jeff here. You've got this!"
Who will win my big match...today?
Who will win yours? (And if you're brave, make your own lists.... really pretty helpful actually!)
