Yep! Passion is not THE KEY to doing what you love.. and loving what you do... and making a lot of money doing it.
Totally agree.
I continue to follow the "Is passion REALLY the key to success?" debate.... People with as much clout as Mike Rowe (TV's Dirty Jobs Host) and Mark Cuban (multimillionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks)
They react to the people who advertise.. "Just follow your passion and be successful.. That's what I did!"
Really?
Is that really what you did??
No! Even if that's PART of your story. If passion was all it took, then every American Idol contestant would be famous!
There's something even more fundamental and at the base of what unlocks people.
It's what differentiates the majority of people (Best stats show 70 to 80%) who feel stuck and doing work they either loathe, are detached from, or SO wish they could leave - FROM those who THRIVE doing THEIR THING doing what they do best.
It's what changed my life when I was in the throes of depression wondering if I had ANYTHING meant for me.
It's real gift - your "superpower." And it matters even more than your education, your training, your job title, yes... and even your passion."
I call it "superpower" because to the rest of us who don't have what you have... it's SUPER! We ask, "How do you do that??"
And the reason I'm writing this is the reason this matters so much!
I am constantly surprised at how many VERY gifted people have no real understanding at what they're GREAT at... or what they think they are, is really not it.It's not their fault... Who helps people know AND unlock their real gifts? (AND say "no" to other things!)
The reason: most of us don't have a mirror that reflects back at what our unique differentiators. It takes community. Even if we see genius in others... it tends to flow so naturally from u that we tend to just give it away.... or like the foolish manager Jesus taught about, "Bury it."
Incredibly, others watched you since you were little and maybe were even amazed. BUT since few parents are trained or equipped in unlocking the giftings of their own kids, they likely didn't take note of it...It tends to show up as early as two or three years old!
Yes, it costs you money when you don't know and utilize your "Superpower" but it also costs some other things that may be more valuable than money.Fruitfulness (growing things)
Impact (changing people's lives)
Emotional Health (not feeling fully alive every day!)
Relationships (not bringing the best you to others... Can lead to divorce (and most never think of this!)
Legacy (changing the world in a way that lasts!)
Not true! And most people go to work each day NOT using their superpowers and give away their superpower.
But, the best thing is that you can make others people's lives better, even transform them by utilizing that unique ability.
TOO many business people think their "business is just a business."
Too many educators think, "I'm just a teacher."
What's the best way you can add value?
But, you need to
Know that superpower.
Believe in it with conviction and confidence
Know who REALLY needs it.
Have a blueprint or strategy to use that power.
That takes a process that involves discerning your story and finding the "10x" things where you shined doing what you're motivated to do.
I know, it comes naturally, but ESPECIALLY if you're not currently fully utilizing your superpower day to day....most of us need to intentionally say "NO" to the "not us" and do the hard work to either find OR create the paths.Key point: Even if you use your superpower - hard work, persistence and resilience still factor in! The hardest part may involve what you intentionally quit doing.
However, you'll notice, the joy factor is priceless. Even if it's hard, you'll still love it!
It's when you combine your true superpower with your passion that things happen in big ways.
It's when you discover who REALLY needs AND wants what you do.
It's when you learn how to actively articulate it and communicate it.
It's when you discover that people will pay you for what your superpower (and they should!)
And why settle for anything else in this one and only life you've been given?? Even it it takes time, self-knowledge and perseverance.
