One of the challenges we face in this life. and in our work... It's prioritizing.
Prioritizing means deciding what you will give your finite quantity of time, attention and money to. It means unfocusing and refocusing. It means saying "no" to something in order to say a bigger "yes" to something else.
There's plenty of bright shiny objects out there calling our name and telling us "Listen to me!" "Here's what you need!" "This is what brought fabulous breakthrough and gzillions for us!"
There may be nothing wrong with the "big shiny object" in and of itself. It may be great for someone else at some point or for you in the not-too-distant future. But, is that what's right for you now? If it is, will it help you complete your bigger mission?
OR is there something you need to finish first? Focus on that. Fill your day or week or month with completing it?
And, for better or worse, you know the next "big shiny thing" will fill your inbox and well-meaning folks will try to get your attention... But, is that creating far too much frenzy for you instead of serving your bigger purpose or your most important mission?
And eveyr study we see says that "multi-tasking" is a farce. We can really one do one thing at a time. So, why not finish it first?
Frankly, starting things can be a great strength and can be energizing. But, it can also rob you from peace, enjoyment and genuiine productivity towards what matters most.
Greek Philosopher Euripides said, "Do not plan for ventures before finishing what's at hand."
And in the Bible, Paul wrote that his "only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me.." (Acts 20:24)
In this 2-Minute-Mindset video Gregg and I share this vision of having "Finishing it First" as a key to stress-free productivity... and productivity period!
