Last week I spent some time with Josh, my eleven year old son. Walking through the woods of Camp Paradise in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I asked him an open ended question: "What would you do if you had a whole month.... you could do anything, go anywhere, and had all the money to do it?"
"All the money?" he asked. "Yeah, all the money."
"OK," he said, "With all the money I'd go to Africa, take all that money and build houses for everyone who doesn't have them. I'd ask (my friend) Matt and (my cousin) David to help.... Then, I'd find a cure for cancer. I'd put the money together to get the smartest people together in one place to do it.... Then," he said, "Since I have all the money, I'd build a dream house."
"Wow! "I thought. There's some vision. And all I asked was a simple question!
So how about you. Same question. Forget what my son said for a moment. What would you do? "You have one month to do whatever you want. Go anywhere. Do whatever. And all the money to do it. What would you do?"
A deep thought. So how would you answer? Just off the cuff.
Now stop and think for a moment. Doesn't your answer to this simple question reflect what's important to you? What you value...at least right now? Really value.
Hmmm... Could make for an interesting discussion with a good buddy, a spouse while on a drive or taking a hike. Or try asking the question to your teenager over a cup of Joe. And have fun! OK?
