I had to catch myself this morning when I started worrying about another group working with others to help them discover and engage their life calling and mission. "Would others NOT work with us?" "Might they steal from us?"
I was quickly reminded of something a church leader shared with me when I was pastoring Beacon Community Church in the Boston area. "When the waters rise, all the boats rise," he told me. In other words, when they do well... we all win! ...Particularly when it comes to doing things that very few do or want to do to make this world a better place. With that in mind, this wise pastor actively sought unity and collaboration in a city where, sadly, minister's subtly competed for "market share." I enjoyed the ride. A few years later, Stephen Covey coined a term to counter the same "If you win, I lose" mindset: Abundance Mentality. The abundance mentality sees opportunity galore! In contrast, to the "scarcity mentality" that worries, "What if they get what I should get?" the abundance mentality celebrates their wins as well.
Once again, when you know what you, yourself, are born to do, you need not worry what others do. When you operate in your sweet spot and feel confident that this is what you (and/or your organization) are awesome at, you quit competing.... instead you serve. You strive for excellence based on you.... and you set your own standards.
Feeling concerned about what "they're doing?" This may be a test of your own abundance faith. When the waters rise, all the boats will rise. Yours too! Do you believe that?
