I realize this could post could be seen as somewhat self-serving.... and it is.... but it's not. It's not because as Bill Hybels says, "when a leader gets better, everybody wins." And this is a way for leaders to get better. Much better! Much, much, much better!
Having recently turned 50, I am more committed than ever to just sharing my truth without caring so much. So here's my truth: if you're a leader, you NEED to have a coach. Most likely worth MUCH more than what you (or if they're smart, your organization) pay for their services.
Let me explain.
First: When I say "coach" that's different from a mentor, a consultant or a counselor.
A mentor is typically not a trained individual; but someone who simply has wisdom because of his or her life journey. They have experiences and expertise that you don't have.
A consultant is someone who has a specific technical knowledge in your field of work.
A counselor is someone who helps you find healing and psychological wholeness and overcome debilitating inner issues.
"someone who is an expert at helping you tease out what you would like to do and dig deeper within your own psyche to find solutions for issues." (from Wes Saade) If they are also a spiritual coach, they will help you dig deeper into your soul and point you to God as well. (or point you deeper to a spiritual director for more of that).
And, this is an important clarification: a great coach is NOT better than you or more experienced than you in YOUR game. They are great coaches... NOT great CEO's, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, non-profit leaders.... etc...
So, why do leaders need coaches NOW? Here are 7 good reasons.
1. Stop Being SO alone in your own head
There really are issues that can't be processed with anyone else... but a coach. There are things that no partner, spouse or board member can process. "Should I quit?" "Should I fire them?" "Should I start a new organization?"
I once asked a well known recently retired corporate leader what he most regretted in his leadership. His response: "being so alone. I had no friends and no one I could share all of me with."
A great coach creates a companion for what a leader is REALLY processing. They become trusted confidantes.
2. Solve Problems
One of the biggest problems leaders have... an unwillingness to address their biggest and most nagging problems. Here's the problem with that problem: Many leaders don't have a set time or way to actively address the problem before bringing it to their team OR acting.
Coaches create safe places to solve those problems.
3. See a Bigger Vision
A great coach can help a leader play at a higher level by actively connecting their best gifts to a big dream. They tend to be visionary types who see into the future and believe in changing the world for the better. It's actually why most go into coaching in the first place.
Leaders with vision galvanize others and attract resources and opportunities. How important are those?
4. Safe Place to Dump
Let's face it, sometimes leaders just need a place to share their failures, fears and frustrations... especially their people frustrations.
Warning: if married... DO NOT simply share these with your spouse and think that's a good thing.
Warning: DO NOT share these with your team and think you're helping them.
DO share them with your coach....
AND with God of course!
A coach doesn't manage you... however they will remind you of your commitments and as Gary Keller notes in his excellent book, The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results, "Individuals who wrote their goals and sent progress reports to friends were 76.7 percent more likely to achieve them.... Simply sharing your progress toward your goals with someone regularly... makes you twice as effective."
6. Process and Apply Learning
Of course, leaders MUST be learners. It's part of what makes them leaders! However, how many times do you read great books, attend great conferences, even leadership conferences, then just move on? No application. No change. No transformation.
Been there... paid for the conference.... filed the conference notebook... eventually just threw it out...kind of discouraged.
I am convinced that leadership conference organizers would be wise if they combined breakout sessions and retreats with trained coaches as part of their leadership development conference. Then they might add ongoing coaching as a way for their content delivered year round. (now even virtually)
FAR too much great content gets "flushed away" and becomes irrelevant simply because no one is asking, "What will YOU do with what you learned?" "How does this apply to you?"
7. Grow Spiritually
Yes, this one is where I find a huge passion. One of the reasons churches, organizations and even families are not growing spiritually is because their leaders are not growing spiritually. No time. No focus. No perceived benefits. No models... And yes, no coaches.
What if.... Just what if there were trained coaches who integrated BOTH professional/leadership development coaching with spiritual growth and development? What a concept? Instead of just asking, "What can you do to grow market share?" they asked, "What are you hearing from God?" "How is your soul doing?"
Maybe... just maybe... spiritual leadership will not be the reserved department of a few trained seminarians and professional preachers.
Sure seems like a calling for some "weird birds" who are passionate about leadership but want to raise up leaders who change the world... not just survive... if that.
But, what difference might it make in your leadership and your life if you also had this kind of coaching? OR what if you offered this kind of coaching to your team members? To entrepreneurs? To missionaries? To pastors? To your teen and twenty-something?
Might great progress take place?
