It's sure hard to dream big when you're in a lousy mood. Dreary days don't do much more than make us feel bad about ourselves, our circumstances and others around us. Depression is real, but I sure wouldn't recommend it as a way of life.
While coaching a highly intelligent, big dreaming young guy the other day, I realized the negative side of his "emotional balance sheet" was beginning to "eat his dream lunch" and was even affecting his health. I told him, "Once you start piling up relational challenges, debt, setbacks and sleepless nights, you either do something to get on the positive side of the balance sheet to override the life-gnawing negatives, or you're headed for trouble." (And I do know! Been there, done that, wrote the blog!)
Over the last year or so, I discovered three key mood altering activities that almost always coincided with MY best days. When I did all three things, I typically had a great day. When I did two, I tended to have good day. One, I could at least cope. Zero, not good. Here are my personal three. (They will likely be different from your three.)
Exercise. Even just break a sweat. Best case, do it outdoors.
Write. Create a blog post, an article or a section of one of my book projects. (I realize most of you would say, "Writing is on the plus side for you!? That would be a negative for me." And that's OK, this is MY list!)
Coach. Help others discover, fund or engage their dreams or goals. I get to do this for a living. However, on days when I don't have any scheduled coaching clients, I can volunteer to coach people who can't afford to pay me. (Today, I will meet with a homeless 18-year-old boy who needs a job and a break!)
So, what are YOUR three mood altering activities? What can you do today (and each day) to make today go from bad to good to great? Write them down.
Here are some you may consider (Most of these I've heard from others)
Go for a walk outside
Write in a journal
Work in the garden
Tinker on your car
Serve someone in need
Give something away
Play the guitar/piano
Listen to great music
