Clearly laziness can be a moral issue. "I choose not to exert myself. I'd rather just watch the game. Pass the potato chips" Survey says? WRONG ANSWER!
However, when it comes to the workplace, many people who've been labeled as "lazy "or "bad workers" really aren't. They're "misfits." They've chosen, or been placed, in the wrong place, doing the wrong things, to accomplish the wrong goals. They're not gifted, not motivated, not rewarded.... or all of the above. One of the most expensive problems in our country, in your company, in your employees or in your life... is when someone spends most of their working hours (or their whole career!) as a misfit.
How much is it costing you?
Square pegs in round holes do not a happy situation make! However, give them the right situation with the right fit and watch what happens. Mr. Lazy becomes the star performer! Ms. Lazy becomes Ms. Energized! Bad teams become great teams! I've seen it!
How do you know if you, or someone on your team, is a misfit? Here are a few telltale signs...
You avoid doing some of the central things to your job or frequently put them off until "later."
The quality of your work has decreased, instead of improved, over time.
You're chronically tired, fatigued or moody after your work day. (No, it doesn't need to be that way!)
You can't imagine doing what you do for ten or twenty more years and still have a "life."
You don't feel like you're "the best around" in your role.
You can't wait until the weekends and despise Mondays.
